Why do we come to work? Its a question that everyone should be able to answer. Is it the money, the love of the people you work with, what you are trying to achieve?
Whilst the organisation has a clear role in helping employees understand this, equally the individual must understand what is meaningful for them.
If you lead people then I say this should be the number one question you can answer about those that report to you.
Several years ago, I was stuck between two job options - one for a major global bank that paid about 30% higher than my second option. As I was tossing up which to go for, a friend of mine said 'when you tell your children who you work for and what you do, which would you rather talk to them about?'. That was the trigger for me, and I accepted the lower paid role, and so begun four amazing years of my life working for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
What meaning do you need to derive from your work?
Answer that, get it right, and you will simply be brilliant at what you do.
It’s a question all of us should ask ourselves. Why do we do what we do? In particular, why do we do the work that, for many of us, occupies most of our waking hours for our entire adult lives?
